GARY LANCASTER, Safety and Production Team Leader, Brett Landscaping, Pocklington
Gary has been a member of the Pocklington team since January 2005.
Last year, due to restructures that were carried out across the business, Gary took it upon himself to start looking after the safety systems and paperwork on the site as well as supervising and running the production line he was responsible for. This involved Gary helping update the site risk assessments, COSHH assessments, ensure all check sheets that are required as part of our OHSAS 18001, ISO14001 and ISO9001 certification were completed and ensure training and competency is up to date. This culminated at the annual external audit by our UKAS accredited auditors SIRA, commenting on how smooth a transition it has been, and how well standards had been maintained.
Gary is one of those people who doesn’t talk the talk, but walks the walk. He leads by example; he will never turn a blind eye towards, Safety, Environmental issues or Quality. In 2010, he filled out and highlighted more “Near miss/hazard spots” than any other person on the site. He along with the site Supervisor Michael Chatterton have been instrumental in ensuring that Pocklington has been RIDDOR & LTI free since 2006. He carries out toolbox talks on site each month to the whole site, and is a very vocal member of the site SHE committee, not just raising issues from the shop floor, but also, actively helping come up with solutions for issues raised. He has taken this new role in his stride, and has been keen to learn and develop the role, and has recently completed IOSH Managing Safely, to increase his knowledge.
He has been a key driver in the last 6 months, in helping reduce waste to landfill across the site. Working with a local waste disposal company, Gary has been involved in setting up segregation and recycling systems that are reducing waste costs on the site by around £300 a month and ensuring we improve our green credentials and meet our BES6001 goals and targets.
We at Brett Landscaping would very much like to thank Gary for his hard work and contribution to ensuring his team remain safe and go home “Alive and Well”.
Many congratulations to Gary Lancaster on his fine achievements and to Brett for nominating him.
The 2010 British Precast Awards saw two individuals received outstanding achievement awards.
ROY BROSTER, Milton Pipes Ltd.

Roy has been both a Shop Steward, and a Health and Safety representative for “Unite the Union” at Milton Pipes for many years and has completed 29 years service, following in his father’s footsteps, where Roy now works within the production department.
Safety improvement was added in addition to Roy’s normal duties and, seeing the same goals, Milton and Roy formed a partnership. Roy was up for the challenge to improve the availability of risk assessment and Safe Working and Operating Procedures (or ‘SWOPS’) across the site and improve training.
Roy set to work re-evaluating the tasks, looking at it from the workers point of view, and Milton used Roy, along with the operation workforce, in writing new procedures. The detail included within the SWOPS allowed them to also be used as training aids and the documentation of training given to individuals, so that sign off could be completed on training records as soon as it was completed. Roy has engaged and carried the rest of the workforce with him in this task and gained much respect for his attitude to Health and Safety.
It is safe to say that Milton Pipes could not have achieved as big a change in H&S culture within the organisation without Roy, and it is a valuable lesson that co-operation between workforce , company and unions can make a huge difference. Roy is a man from the shop floor who has made a huge impact in Health and Safety.

Jorge has been with Brett Landscaping since July 2007 and is the production manager at their Poole plant. Under Jorge, not only has Poole site had had zero RIDDORs or LTI’s since late in 2007 (last one November) he has also reduced minor accidents, from 14 to 2 last year, and he continues to promote accident reduction.
In 2009, Jorge completed the most number of Alive and Well behaviour safety talks in the business; this is Brett’s behavioural safety system, Based loosely on DuPont STOP, and in the last year he recorded 91 when his target was to do one a week. He has really engaged with the staff, and is committed to improving the site’s safety performance. He has helped Poole gain the Brett Landscaping Managing Director’s award for best SHE performance for 2008.
Jorge has done this, through coaching, toolbox talks, developing in depth training tools and through feedback, engaging his colleagues to produce a positive result admired by many. |
