Health and Safety Activites

Amongst the many and varied contributions to improving the Health and Safety performance of the Industry, the past year has seen the committte active in introducing, promoting and maintaining progress in these, as well as other projects and initiatives;

The committee met recently and, in addition to many other subjects, noted their support and awareness of this year’s HSE initiative entitled ‘BACKS!’, aiming to reduce the incidence of back injuries caused or made worse by work. The committee has been active in promoting good practice in manual handling, and in the promotion of mechanical handling where feasible.

Regular ‘Safety Alerts’ have been introduced and are circulated to all Member companies to enable the sharing of experiences throughout the Industry.

We are working with the Association of British Insurers to gain recognition under their ‘Making the Market Work’ initiative.

The committee continues to work closely with the HSE in respect of a broad range of Topical Health and Safety Issues.

Strong links have been maintained with the Building Products Training Council and other similar bodies to help promote the safe use of all building materials and to ensure good practice in training and Health and Safety are observed.

All British Precast Full Members are encouraged to support the valuable work of the committee and to send along representatives to the regular meetings. Non-participating observers are also welcome at meetings.

Special working groups, supported by the HSE, continue to be active on a range of special projects, including in the last year; A project commissioned by Tarmac, the Concrete Block Association and HSE on the subject ‘Securing and Covering of Loads in the Concrete Block Industry", which is moving forward to produce a code of practice to be adopted by both HSE and the Industry.

The Precast Flooring Federation (PFF) Health and Safety Committee published a data sheet of recommendations for the installation of concrete floors on lightweight brickwork.
