The Future for Precast Concrete
in Low Rise Housing
- This
major publication was launched on 14 June 2000 following a two-year
feasibility study and has partly been funded by the DETR and
the British Cement Association. It reviews the use of precast
concrete either as individual components or as integrated modular
forms of construction in the low rise housing market.
The 60-page report begins with a chapter on the history of concrete in low-rise
housing and market experiences in Germany, the Netherlands,Scandinavia, Japan
and the USA. Chapter 2 deals with design and construction, looking at both
generic and specific benefits as well as perceptions of cost, value, the attitude
of home buyers and Housing Associations, the Egan report and sustainability.
The final chapter looks to the future and emphasises that there is market
potential for precast in housing, with valuable lessons to be learnt from
countries that use a higher proportion of industrialised housing than the
UK.
The Author, Dr Jacqueline Glass, is the British Cement Association Senior
Lecturer in the School of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University, where
she has been carrying out research in concrete construction since 1994.
Copies of the Report, priced at £35 (post and packing
