Sustainability Charter

Aim of the Charter

The aim of the Precast Sector Sustainability Charter is to encourage member companies of British Precast to go beyond legislation and take voluntary actions to make their products and operations more sustainable. In order to meet this aim, a set of sustainability principles has been developed based on the key sustainability issues facing the precast industry; these issues are shown in the diagram below, and were identified by British Precast following consultation with the industry and examination of the priorities and concerns of its primary stakeholders.

Aim of the Sustainability Charter

Charter Status

The sustainability principles are contained in the ‘Member Declaration on Sustainability’. The first step towards charter status is for a company to sign this declaration and formally commit to incorporating these principles into normal business and working practices. Companies making this commitment are referred to as ‘Charter Signatories’. The second step is to pass a performance audit; this has been designed to ensure that signatory companies are complying with the spirit of the charter and taking voluntary actions to improve their performance on sustainability. Charter status is awarded to those companies that can demonstrate the required level of commitment across a broad range of issues, and is reviewed bi-annually. Companies demonstrating the required level of commitment are referred to as ‘Charter Members’.

Benefits of the Sustainability Charter

The Precast Sector Sustainability Charter provides member companies with a way of demonstrating that they are going beyond legislation and undertaking voluntary actions to improve their performance on a range of issues under the broad theme of sustainability. Furthermore, it guides companies to address the issues that have been identified as having the greatest impacts on economic viability, social progress and environmental performance in the precast sector. The charter also provides the industry’s stakeholders with a means of differentiating between those companies that are committed to sustainability and continuous improvement of their performance, and those who have not yet made this commitment.
