A Domestic Precast Sector is essential for the UK
The products our industry manufactures contribute to the UK construction industry - improving our schools, houses, offices, hospitals, transport networks, utilities and quality of life.
British Precast is part of the wider UK Mineral Products Industry which directly contributed to the UK economy by generating over £6.4bn in GVA in 2014, had a turnover of £20bn and contributed to £495bn turnover in industries downstream of the supply chain.
The UK Precast Sector has an annual turnover of £1.3 billion and directly employs 13,000 people in the UK .
UK production and UK jobs
Precast concrete and concrete blocks are formed from three constituents: water, cement and aggregates. More than 80% of cement is manufactured in the UK from UK sourced materials. More than 95% of aggregates are sourced from within the UK and typically close to the precast factory.
The average travel distance from precast factory to project site is 70 miles - this equates to just a few hours' drive compared to the longer journeys of products imported from abroad . Choosing British Precast means a shorter delivery time and lower carbon.
Responsibly sourced precast
Responsible and ethical sourcing is easy to demonstrate for products made in the UK from UK sourced constituents. British Precast meets this criteria. Look for BES 6001 certfiication on construction products. All British Precast members are signatories to our Sustainability Charter.
Biodiversity and our rural economy
The concrete industry makes a significant contribution to biodiversity and nature conservation through the management and restoration of sites of mineral extraction. MPA data shows that over 6,000 hectares of priority habitat has been created to date on restored sites.
With an abundant supply of local limestone, the manufacture of cement in the UK results in a lower carbon footprint. The cement sector employs 2,000 people directly, and 15,000 indirectly in mainly UK rural areas .
Buy British Precast
The UK government's 2025 construction targets refer to a 50% reduction in the trade gap between exports and imports for construction products and materials. Buying British Precast will help to address this trade gap and reducing the import of construction products will help to enhance and sustain the UK construction industry.
